The 2009 Call to Artists is here! Deadline November 10, 2008. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Urban Art Installations enliven over 100 feet of sidewalk and window frontage in downtown Tacoma. Tacoma Contemporary, a non-profit organization that advances contemporary art in Tacoma, is seeking artists, artist teams, and curators to create installations that will activate the window spaces and the video kiosk.
For the Woolworth Windows, the three-month exhibitions coincide with two cycles of the Third Thursday Art Walk. Artists should consider how their projects will be site-specific, relating to the space as well as passing pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Applicants may propose installations that encompass single or multiple window spaces. Specific window spaces may be requested, but window availability is contingent on the exhibition schedule. Exhibition dates are listed on the Upcoming Exhibitions page for your reference.
For the Tollbooth Gallery, artists are invited to install video and mixed-media pieces for the two-month exhibitions. The gallery features one 20” LCD monitor, a speaker, and approximately 25 square feet of outdoor wall space on the exterior of the kiosk. Artists should consider both the screen and the external portion of the kiosk in their projects. The external portion may be addressed with 2D work or a constructed 3D portion. Exhibition dates are listed on the Upcoming Exhibitions page for your reference.
The spaces are located in the heart of downtown Tacoma and receive extensive pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The window at 11th and Commerce Street is adjacent to both the bus and light rail lines. The 11th and Broadway windows and the Tollbooth Gallery are exposed to 10,000 Farmer's Market visitors each Thursday from May through September.
As the windows are a highly public venue, TaCo encourages projects that are accessible and sensitive to a wide audience. Proposals to use the space solely to exhibit existing works will not be considered unless the work is presented within the framework of an installation.
Artists are responsible for installation and deinstallation of their projects. TaCo will provide a list of local art installers and holding locations for shipped artwork; artists are responsible for costs incurred with these services.
At the conclusion of the exhibition, the principal artist or curator will receive a $100 honorarium. |
